A Buyer's Guide to Silk Bedding
This article aims to explain the most important quality criteria to consider when purchasing silk bedding. The quality of the raw materials, the fabric density, and the level of craftsmanship will all impact the cost price.
At Maison de la Soie, we’ve decided to limit our selection to the highest-quality silk while maintaining very competitive prices through direct online sales. Our products are built to last and to offer you unparalleled comfort.
1- Mulberry Silk
Mulberry silk is the result of ancient Chinese craftsmanship and is produced by silkworms of the Bombyx mori species. To make their cocoons, silkworms feed exclusively on mulberry leaves.
The larvae of this domesticated moth, selectively bred for generations,
produce a cocoon with a fine yet very strong, uniform, and naturally white filament.
It is above all these unmatched natural qualities that explain silk’s enduring popularity over the centuries.
Mulberry silk is entirely different from wild silk, which has a weaker, irregular filament and a yellowish tint.
2- The long fibers of Grade A silk
Grade A corresponds to the highest quality of silk. It involves selecting high-quality cocoons that yield a long, even filament.
For silk bedding, this means there are fewer broken threads. Silk satin is even more luxurious, softer, and more durable.
3- Momme
Momme is a unit of measurement for the density of silk fabrics. For bedding, the momme ranges from 12 to 19.
This is one of the most important selection criteria for silk bedding, because the thicker the silk satin, the more durable, softer, and visibly luxurious it is.
Our silk is of the highest quality, at 19 momme.
4- Seamless Sheets
The price of silk rolls varies greatly depending on their width. It is more economical to join two pieces of fabric lengthwise to create a wide sheet.
However, having a seam down the middle of your sheets is both uncomfortable and unattractive. We offer only seamless sheets.
5- Satin
Satin is a soft, lustrous fabric that can be made from any type of yarn. The word “satin,” on its own, generally refers to polyester satin, but you’ll also find cotton satin, viscose satin, and so on.
Obviously, there’s no comparison—visually or to the touch—between these fabrics and natural silk satin. Be wary of dishonest websites that sell polyester satin as silk satin.
6- Beware of Asian websites
We regularly receive feedback from exasperated customers who have been scammed by foreign websites.
Before buying from a foreign website, remember:
● Prices are listed exclusive of VAT and other taxes.
● VAT and customs duties on the purchase price, including shipping costs, are payable, and failure to declare these in advance may result in fines or seizure of goods.
● It is generally impossible or extremely costly to return an order
