Silk for skin problems

Skin problems such as acne and eczema are quite common, and very unpleasant to live with on a daily basis. To relieve the itching and irritation they cause, dermatologists and beauty specialists recommend the use of silk.

What are acne and eczema?

Acne

Acne is a disease that mainly affects teenagers, but also some adults. It results in the appearance of pimples due to an overproduction of sebum (an oily substance that helps protect the epidermis). It generally affects oily skin. However, dry skin can also be prone to acne as a result of hormonal imbalance, external aggression (pollution) or poor lifestyle habits.

Eczema

Eczema, on the other hand, is a skin condition linked to allergies, stress, irritating products, etc. It is characterized by inflammation of the skin, with the appearance of redness, dryness and intense itching. The more you scratch, the more you risk aggravating your condition, as bacteria can more easily penetrate your skin.

In both cases, the aggravating factors are skin dehydration and lesions (due to pimple-piercing in the case of acne, and itching in the case of eczema).

How does silk relieve skin problems?

1. Silk is hygienic

Did you know that a pillowcase is a veritable nest of bacteria? Dead skin, dust and dust mites can all find their way onto your pillowcase, even if you wash before going to bed. We recommend that you clean your pillowcase at least once a week!
Silk is a naturally hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial and anti-mite material. It retains fewer impurities than a cotton pillowcase, for example. What's more, a silk pillowcase can be washed just once or twice a month. That makes all the difference!

2. Silk reduces dehydration

As we've seen, dehydration accentuates imperfections. During the day, you regularly drink water and apply moisturizers, but at night, when you're asleep, you can't nourish your skin as well as you could. you do it in broad daylight. The good news is that silk is a hydrophobic fabric, meaning it doesn't absorb water from your skin. So it's the perfect fabric to keep your skin hydrated all night long.

3. Silk helps skin care products work better

To treat your skin problems, you usually apply creams or lotions. Silk absorbs these products much less than other fabrics. Silk allows your skin care products to penetrate deeper and be more effective.

4. Silk soothes itching

Silk limits inflammation. It glides gently over the skin, calming sensitive, irritated skin. What's more, thanks to its thermoregulating properties, silk cools pruritic areas and reduces perspiration, which, like heat, tends to exacerbate itching.

5. Silk helps heal blemishes

Silk comes from the cocoon that protects the Bombyx Mori silkworm. It is composed of two proteins with miraculous virtues:

  • fibroin is silk thread: used in cosmetics to provide softness, suppleness and hydration
  • sericin is like a glue that holds fibroin in place like a cocoon: it has healing and purifying properties. Sericin is also used in surgery to accelerate healing and as a treatment for burns.

Silk is a 100% natural beauty treatment. The silk pillowcase is its emblematic product. It's worth noting that "In 95% of acne sufferers, the face is the area most often affected by acne." (Source: ameli.fr). So, to protect your face as much as possible, and to avoid damaging it while you sleep, choose a silk pillowcase: 43% of acne sufferers also suffer from acne on their backs. As for eczema, although it also affects the face, it tends to manifest itself mainly in the folds (neck, elbow, back of the knee, hands, wrists, ankles). To relieve your skin problems, we recommend our 100% mulberry silk bed linen.

FAQ

Silk pillowcases are they better for acne-prone or atopic skin?
Yes. Their smooth surface limits rubbing and irritation, while their low absorbency leaves moisture and care in place. Combined with a gentle routine (non-stripping cleanser, regular pillowcase change), they offer a healthier environment for acne-prone or atopic skin.
Can silk soothe eczema (and psoriasis)?
Silk, naturally soft and thermoregulating, reduces friction and perspiration, two factors that exacerbate redness and itching. It can therefore help soothe the discomfort associated with eczema (and sometimes psoriasis). This does not replace dermatological monitoring: in the event of a flare-up, ask your doctor for advice.
Does sleeping on silk help with evening skin care?
Yes. Silk absorbs creams and serums less than cotton, so the active ingredients stay on the skin longer. To optimize effectiveness, leave your care products to penetrate for a few minutes before going to bed, and wash your pillowcase regularly.
Is silk hypoallergenic?
Yes. Its natural fiber, smooth and dense, limits the retention of allergens (mites, dust, pollens). Choose 100% mulberry silk and, if possible, certified silk (e.g. Oeko-Tex®) to guarantee the absence of undesirable substances.
Is silk antibacterial?
Silk is naturally less conducive to bacterial growth than more absorbent materials. However, it's no substitute for good hygiene: wash your pillowcase regularly (and change it frequently) to maintain a clean, skin-friendly environment.
Does silk promote better sleep quality, and therefore more beautiful skin?
Yes, indirectly. Silk reduces friction, helps stabilize temperature and improves night-time comfort: conditions favorable to skin regeneration. For durably more beautiful skin, combine it with an appropriate routine and a healthy lifestyle.
