When is White Month?
Le Mois du Blanc takes place every year in France during the month of January. This year at Maison de la soie, the discount period begins on January 11 and ends on February 7, 2023.
What are the origins of White Month?
A nod to the monarchy
One theory about the origins of the Mois du Blanc dates back to the French Revolution. In the aftermath of the war, factories in the town of Cholet, one of the bastions of the textile industry at the time, decided to introduce a period of promotions. The aim was to boost their business, which had suffered as a result of the various battles.
In 1900, Théodore Botrel, a famous singer, composed the song "Le mouchoir rouge de Cholet" (Cholet's red handkerchief) in tribute to the death of Henri de la Rochejaquelein, a royalist fighter from Vendée. La Rochejaquelein was wearing three white scarves, dyed red by his own blood under fire. Taking advantage of the song's success, a manufacturer in Cholet had the idea of creating a white and red handkerchief. He sent it to the singer, who advertised it. The craze for the handkerchief was immediate. Industrialists decided to introduce a period of discounts on products from their spinning mills. White being the color of the monarchy, and Louis XVI having been executed in January, the name was perfect!
A brilliant commercial operation
Finally, the 3rd and best-known story dates back to 19th-century Paris. The creation of the Mois du Blanc is attributed to Aristide Boucicaut, owner of the famous department store Le Bon Marché. To attract customers after the holiday season, he decided to fill his empty shelves with cut-price household linen. These were the beginnings of the winter sales. In this version of the story, white evokes the color of linen, which was predominantly white at the time, as well as the snow that covered the streets of Paris in January.Today, the name Le Mois du Blanc has stuck. But don't worry, as trends have evolved and colors have multiplied, it's not just white that's being retired.
